Classic Movie Reviews

About

This page is called "Classic Movie Reviews". Despite the name, not all the movies I discuss here will necessarily be "Classics", just movies that aren't brand new. The only real limitations I have for movies I can't review on this page is if they were released this year. So I can basically review all movies from last year and before. I will have 2 types of reviews on this page, normal reviews and brief reviews, normal reviews are exactly like the ones I have for new movies on my main page, in the same Like/Dislike format, and brief reviews will just sum up my thoughts on the movie in just one short paragraph. This is because, I don't have the time to write out full reviews every time I watch any movie, so this is a good way to give my thoughts on more movies in a way that's easier and faster. I will write a review most of the time whenever I watch older movies, unless it's for a ranking I'm working on, then you can just see my thoughts on the movie by looking at my ranking. I started this page on 8-2-2021 and will try my best to cover every older movie I see after that point. This page is also where I will post rankings that don't connect to any new releases, but are just for fun.

Here Are Brief Reviews of Older Movies A-Z

Le Ballon Rogue (1956)

This movie is just 34 minutes of a boy with a red balloon walking around France with a VERY thin story. There's almost no dialogue and the movie is essentially just a series of shorts that follows a boy carrying around his balloon as the two of them get into some wacky antics. I thought the twist at the end was pretty predictable, I knew it would happen very early into the movie. I didn't hate this movie, I thought it was cute and charming, it's just not really my thing. I give it a B-.

Good Burger (1997)

This movie is actually pretty funny. I have been hearing good things for years and finally got around to watching it last night. The best part is easily the comedy. I laughed multiple times throughout the movie, mainly at the character Ed, who is the standout of the movie. I grew up watching Nickelodeon, and every time I revisit one of the Nickelodeon Original Movies from my childhood, I am always very disappointed. They really don't hold up, especially the comedy, but this movie is actually funny. Around 2010, so many of the Nickelodeon or Disney Channel movies that were released started to go for low brow comedy that only appeals to 7 year old's, and they really haven't come back from it ever since, so it was nice to see one from the 90's back when these movies could actually do comedy. I give this movie a B+.

Last Action Hero (1993)

Going into this movie, I wasn't expecting a masterpiece or anything, just a fun Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie, and I think it delivered on that. The premise of a kid being sucked into a movie and meeting his favorite action hero is so entertaining, it's something that everyone has imagined at one point in time and has a lot of very interesting things that can happen because of it and this movie explores it all. The way that he actually enters the world of the movie doesn't make too much sense, how the golden ticket actually works isn't really explained, but I didn't watch this movie to understand what was happening, I watched it to see explosions and Arnold Schwarzenegger shooting bad guys and this movie delivers on that. It gets a B from me.

The Parent Trap (1961)

While I thought this movie was enjoyable, I also thought it went on for a bit to long. I don't think that this movie needed to go on for over 2 hours. Certain scenes such as the camping scene, the scene at the summer camp, and the first few scenes after the twins first switch places are stretched out for a bit to long, I give it a B.

Pitch Perfect (2012)

I can definitely see why this movie got as popular as it did. It has a lot of great musical numbers filled with catchy songs, as well as a really great sense of humor. This movie actually made me laugh quite a few times, I think it may be one of the funniest movies of the last ten years. I also loved the movie references sprinkled throughout the movie, I thought they were a nice addition. I give it an A-.

Scary Movie (2000)

I absolutely love parodies, and in my opinion, the 2000s were the golden age of Parodies. There's something about this era that was just so funny, the standouts being the Austin Powers trilogy and, of course, Scary Movie. This movie does a nice job of parodying the slasher genre, while not disrespecting it. About 80% of the jokes made me laugh, the other 20% either went too far with the dark humor or sacrificed some amount of storytelling to make the joke, but that's really my only complaint, I really did have fun with this movie and laughed at it a lot. If you are a fan of the horror genre, the comedy genre, or both, there's something in this movie for you and I highly recommend it. I give it a B.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)

I definitely don't think this movie was as funny as the first one. While this movie certainly made me laugh a few times, it was nowhere near as much as when I was watching the first one. A lot of the jokes in this movie don't land, each one for a different reason. Some of it is way too low brow, some of it just takes too long to make the joke, and some of it is just too mean-spirited. I also feel like they don't go far enough with the horror parody stuff inside of this movie. I feel like its so focused on making a bunch of jokes that it forgets about the horror at times. The first movie balanced the horror and the comedy really nicely, but I think this movie focused much more on the comedy that the scary stuff felt sidelined in the movie. I give it a C+.

Shrek (2001)

This movie is partially a parody of the fairy tale genre, but I like how, unlike a lot of other parodies, this movie doesn't get distracted trying to throw in as many jokes at the expense of fairy tales as it can, but instead it actually has it's own great story with it's own great characters. This was the first ever winner of The Best Animated Feature award at the Oscars, and I definitely think it's deserving of that title, I give it an A.

Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation (1992)

I have a little bit of nostalgia for this film. I owned it on DVD when I was a kid and used to watch it on road trips. While it isn't anything mind blowing or anything, it didn't need to be. I think the best part of all Looney Toons/Tiny Toons properties is the nonsensical comedic fun and this movie delivers on that a lot. It is absolutely filled with a ton of gags and jokes that don't make any sense, but that's what makes them so fun and enjoyable. I give it a B.

Up (2009)

While I thought this movie was a great character study of Carl as we see him desperately holding on to the memory of his dead wife, and the first 15 minutes are an amazing, yet heartbreaking use of visual storytelling, the movie gets a bit to farfetched after that, mainly with the flying house and the dogs piloting planes. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a great movie, but I just don't think it's one of the best Pixar movies of all time like many other people. I give it a B+.
